Sun, Lakes and Mountains

The summer holidays are upon us and as an alternative to sun, sea and sand, why not try sun, lakes and mountains?

Families can have a great time in our great outdoors with lots of options, come rain or shine, to keep the children happy and entertained.

Wander down to Keswick's parks, Fitz Park and Hope Park, which are beautiful recreational areas.  Fitz Park has a riverside setting with glorious open views towards Skiddaw and Latrigg.

Check out a great publication ' KidsKeswick' which explores 50 great family adventures in and around Keswick.  Highlighting great activities such as Musical Stones and virtual fishing at Keswick's museums to Wet and Wild in the Langstrath Valley, it is full of ideas for all the family.  KidsKeswick can be bought in all Keswick's bookstores, the Tourist Information Centre or online at www.kidskeswick.co.uk

Fitz and Hope Park

Wander down to Keswick's parks, Fitz Park and Hope Park.

Fitz Park has a riverside setting with glorious open views towards Skiddaw and Latrigg.  With a newly installed fabulous award winning play area there is now equipment to cater for toddlers through to teenagers, During the summer, there will also be a Climbing Wall in Fitz Park for youngsters to try. Take a seat and watch the local cricket teams who play in the centre of the park or picnic alongside the River Greta. The Upper Park is a smaller formal area with bowling green, tennis and putting amid specimen trees and shrubs. The games kiosk sells hot & cold drinks, snacks & ice creams & has a plant centre attached.

Hope Park has attractive landscaped grounds with a stream garden and woodland walk set in magnificent scenery.

For both visitors and locals alike Hope Park is one of Keswick's main attractions. Located between Keswick town centre and Derwentwater it is a favourite stopping place en route to and from the lake. Hope Park offers a very popular 9 hole pitch and putt, 18 hole obstacle golf, 18 hole putting course and also a large, locally sourced plant centre to tempt gardeners. Recent environmentally friendly features are the large patch of woodland and the wildlife observation point. The Bungy Trampoline will be in Hope Park during the summer holidays, as well as a Climbing Wall.

Take a stroll through the beautiful formal gardens where you'll find plenty of seats to relax and watch the world go by.

Derwent Island Open Days

Derwent Isle is the largest and most northerly of the four islands on Derwentwater. In medieval times it was owned by Fountains Abbey. It came into the King's hands in 1539 and was sold in 1569 to the German miners of the Company of Mines Royal. After several other owners it passed to Joseph Pocklington in 1778, who built a large house on the island. Various other buildings were erected, including a Gothic chapel-boathouse and a Druid Circle.

The Island is now tenanted, and is not normally open to the public, though occasional trips are offered from the landing stage nearby to visit the island and house. For 2010 the dates are 22nd July, 5th August and 12th September.  You need to book 3 days in advance at the National Trust Kiosk by the lakeside in Keswick  - telephone 017687 73780

See the Lemurs at Trotters World of Animals

Joining Trotters World of Animals as Senior Keeper, Lee Beach has a mission - to help conservation of Lemurs in their homeland of Madagascar! Lee joined the team at Trotters World of Animals just a few weeks ago, moving from Newquay Zoo so he could work with some new species and develop his passion for lemur conservation

Richard Robinson, Park Manager at Trotters World of Animals said “Our keepers are all professional and all our keeper talks are popular with visitors. It’s great to have someone like Lee joining our team, he is very knowledgeable on several species but has really taken our lemur troop to heart. Visitors really enjoy the lemur experiences - Lee makes it so real because he knows first hand about the conservation and has so many stories to tell. We have always had a strong conservation and preservation ethos and this is a great opportunity for people to see how we are helping make a difference.”

Trotters World of Animals at Bassenthwaite has grown from a tin hut in a field to one of Cumbria's top tourist attractions with over 100 species on display. This year, they were awarded highly commended in the Cumbria Tourism Awards for best small visitor attraction. For more information about the Lemur conservation project and lemur encounters, call Lee at Trotters World of Animals on 017687 76239
